Their Excellencies, Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera and Advocate Duma Gabriel Boko, on Sunday July 6 graced Malawi’s 61 years of independence anniversary celebrations at the Bingu National Stadium in the City of Lilongwe, where thousands of people from all walks of life gathered for the auspicuious occasion.

Malawi attained it's independence from the British Government on 6th July 1964, under its first President, late Ngwazi Dr. Hastings Kamuzu Banda.

Activities marking the event include military parades, traditional dances, and an international friendly football match between the Flames of Malawi and the Zebras of Botswana. On Saturday, President Chakwera led Malawians to a national service of worship giving praises and thanks to God for keeping mother Malawi safe during this period.

The theme for this year's Independence Day is: "Restoring Broken Foundation, Taking Malawi Forward."

In his remarks, Advocate Boko said Malawi may not be where it was supposed to be in terms of development but he expressed trust that the Chakwera led administration has the capacity to take Malawi out of various social and economic ills.

On this note, President Boko while wishing Malawians peaceful general elections on September 16th this year, challenged local leaders to be committed and steadfast in bringing solutions to challenges facing Malawians.

Speaking earlier, President Chakwera called on Malawians to carry out all their duties with integrity. He condemned the destruction of public facilities such as road signs, theft of public money, theft of medicine in hospitals saying the tendencies retards national development.

On this note, the Malawi leader advised Malawians to avoid talking ill about their own country.
