Religious leaders in the country have a huge responsibility to offer hope to their members in times of dire need as has been the case with Malawi during various natural calamities, says President Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera.
He was speaking earlier today at Silver Stadium in Lilongwe during official consecration of Right Reverend Canon Daniel Kalonga, as the 4th Diocesan Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Lake Malawi.
In his message to the congregation, President Chakwera said Malawians look up to their religious leaders for spiritual, moral and sometimes material assistance especially during dark moments.
The Malawi leader made reference to some of the natural disasters that have ravaged livelihoods, these include Covid19 and a series of cyclones.
“Just as was the case God called me to the service of politics in 2013, he calls you too our new Bishop to be the hope to the hopeless. I pray for you and wish you well as you commence this challenging yet noble duty,” he said.
Bishop Kalonga was born on 7th May 1980, in Buzi Chimbwanda Village, Traditional Authority Malenga in Ntchisi. He becomes the fourth bishop to lead the Anglican Diocese of Lake Malawi.
Bishop Kalonga was elected in succession to the Rt. Rev. Francis Kaulanda on 4th April 2025, during an Elective Assembly held at St Thomas Church in Lilongwe. Prior to his election, Kalonga served as the Diocese’s Vicar General and as Rector of St Thomas Church in Lilongwe.
