Vision Malawi2063 was ratified just a year into President Chakwera’s first term and he from the onset singled out food security as a deliverable that once achieved will be a huge stepping stone to sustainable development.
This aspect has been approached from both short and long term perspectives. Both routine crop production and emergency interventions to buffer inadequacies in food availability have been granted the deserved seriousness.
On top of incentivizing the system to produce enough food for the citizens, there have been deliberate efforts to restructure the marketing and storage of strategic grain and other cash crops.
Problems to be solved
Resizing of Agricultural Development and Marketing Corporation (ADMARC) to improve efficiency in grain marketingand storage, and agro-processing
Provision of food to vulnerable communities due to climate induced eventualities
Timely rehabilitation of major grain reserves across the country
Opportunities to unlock
Over 5.7 million Malawians have been supported through lean season food relief programs.
ADMARC has resumed subsidized maize sales, ensuring affordability and market stability.
Strategic grain reserves have been expanded and utilized to respond to food shortages.
