Land is a fundamental resource for agriculture, housing, and investment. The Chakwera administration has prioritized equitable access to land and secure tenure systems that support productivity and empower marginalized groups, especially women and youth.
Since 2020, land reforms have focused on unlocking the value of customary land while aligning land management systems with Malawi’s development agenda.

Inequitable land access and insecure tenure, especially for women and youth
Fragmented and outdated land legislation
Underutilized and idle land with no enforcement of development timelines
Opportunities to unlock
Reviewed the Customary Land Act to reflect stakeholder concerns and promote equity
Launched a nationwide land consolidation program to enhance land use efficiency
Established transparent digital land registry systems to combat fraud and increase accessibility
