Mining is one of Malawi’s fastest-growing sectors under the ATM Strategy (Agriculture, Tourism, Mining). The Chakwera administration has restructured the sector to ensure transparent, equitable, and sustainable exploitation of mineral resources.
A national framework is in place to boost investor confidence and maximize value for Malawians.
Problems to be solved
Informal mining with no oversight or environmental safeguards
Weak revenue collection and transparency in contracts
Limited value addition within the country
Opportunities to unlock
Established the Malawi Mining Investment Company and National Mining Company
Opened the Mineral Laboratory Complex for quality assurance and local processing
Negotiated Mining Development Agreements for projects like Kayelekera (Uranium) Kanyika (Niobium) and Kasiya (Rutile)
