The Chakwera administration has prioritized the protection and welfare of persons with albinism, addressing longstanding issues of discrimination, violence, and social exclusion. Recognizing the unique vulnerabilities faced by this community, the government has implemented measures aimed at enhancing their security and promoting inclusivity.
Since 2020, initiatives have included the construction of secure housing for individuals with albinism, with the aim of providing safe living environments to deter attacks. Additionally, the administration has taken steps to strengthen legal frameworks to ensure severe punishment for perpetrators of crimes against persons with albinism. Efforts have also been made to promote the rights and representation of people with albinism within governmental structures.
Problems to be solved
Persistent threats and attacks against persons with albinism, including killings and abductions
Inadequate implementation of protective measures and slow progress in fulfilling housing commitments
Limited representation and inclusion of persons with albinism in decision-making processes
Opportunities to unlock
Construction of secure housing units to meet the targeted number within the promised timeframe
Enhanced legal protections and swift justice for crimes against persons with albinism
Promote greater inclusion by appointing individuals with albinism to leadership and advisory roles within government, case in point being Honourable Overstone Kondowe, Member of Parliament for Nkhotakota North East who earlier served President Chakwera as advisor.
