Respecting Traditional Leadership for Community Development

Help spread the word about this important policy

Traditional leaders are central to Malawi’s cultural heritage and community governance. Recognizing their pivotal role, President Chakwera made it a point from Day One to restore the dignity and authority of chiefs, moving away from previous practices where they were often used for political purposes such as supporting particular candidates for ruling party leadership.

Through deliberate policy interventions, the Chakwera administration continues to demonstrate a commitment to empowering traditional leaders, ensuring they are respected partners in governance and development, thereby fostering a more inclusive and culturally grounded national progress.

Problems to be solved

Historical marginalization of traditional leaders, where their roles were undermined and politicized, leading to diminished authority and respect within communities.

Lack of formal engagement between government and traditional authorities, resulting in missed opportunities for collaborative development and governance.

Inadequate support and resources for chiefs to effectively carry out their duties and contribute to national development.

Opportunities to unlock

Inauguration of the National Chiefs Forum: President Chakwera presided over the first National Chiefs Forum on Natural Resources Management, emphasizing the integral role of chiefs in environmental conservation and sustainable agriculture. This forum established a platform for chiefs to collaborate with the government on national development initiatives.

Enhanced Welfare for Chiefs: The administration has increased honoraria for chiefs and invested in infrastructure to support their roles. For instance, President Chakwera toured the newly constructed residence for Paramount Chief Kawinga, reaffirming the government's commitment to uplifting the welfare of traditional leaders.

Promotion and Elevation of Chiefs: The administration has continued to recognize and elevate traditional leaders, as seen in the promotion of T/A Bwananyambi to Senior Chief. Paramount Chief Kawinga lauded President Chakwera for maintaining good relations with chiefs and supporting their advancement.
