Tertiary education is crucial to Malawi’s transition into a knowledge-based economy. The Chakwera administration has emphasized expanding access, promoting equity, and modernizing tertiary institutions to meet the needs of a transforming economy and labor market.
The MCP government has focused on removing structural barriers, improving infrastructure, and aligning curricula with industry demands.
Problems to be solved
Discriminatory quota system limiting access to public universities
Inadequate university infrastructure and limited student capacity
High university fees and limited financial support for disadvantaged students
Opportunities to unlock
Immediate abolishment of the quota system to ensure merit-based access regardless of region or background
Upward revision of tuition and upkeep allowances for public university students to K560,000 per annum
Increased loan access from 11,000 to 30,000 university students
