Malawi’s tourism sector is on a strong recovery trajectory, with increased investments, improved infrastructure, and expanded international access positioning it as a key driver of economic growth.

This has come in alignment with the newly-found national development aspirations that position Tourism among priority areas for accelerated economic growth together with Agriculture and Mining.

This far, the administration has increased investments in infrastructure that will upscale the tourism industry and make it yield to the creation of sustainable jobs and wealth.

Problems to be solved

Creating a structured framework on viable investments in the Tourism sector via the National Tourism Investment Masterplan

Turnaround in international tourist arrivals with an increase of 64% in 2022, reaching 708,000 visitors. Domestic tourism expenditure also rose from MK402.7 billion in 2019 to MK632.1 billion in 2023, reflecting increased local tourism activity.

Opportunities to unlock

Investment in tourism surged from MK50.8 billion in 2021 to a projected MK62.7 billion in 2024, indicating renewed investor confidence.

The tourism sector’s employment contribution increased from 496.2 thousand jobs in 2022 to a projected 670 thousand jobs in 2024.

Opening of the skies in the Northern Region to resume flights at Karonga and Mzuzu airports
