President Chakwera has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the people of the Northern Region through tangible development such as provision of potable water and sanitation facilities to improve livelihoods.

He made this bold pledge on Thursday in Rumphi when he officially commissioned the Vwaza Gravity-Fed Water Supply Scheme at Thazima, a life-changing project constructed under his leadership.

The Thazima Water Supply Scheme is designed to provide potable water and create sustainable communities on the borders of two significant tourist attraction sites; Nyika National Park and Vwaza Marsh Wildlife Reserve in Rumphi District.

The water project was primarily conceptualised to primarily eliminate the wildlife dangers that communities around Nyika National Park were facing when searching for clean drinking water.

It is already benefitting over 18,000 people now and 33,000 by 2034.

In his remarks, the President highlighted how his administration remains determined to transform livelihoods through a number of overlapping interventions not only in water and sanitation but across the entire economic and social empowerment spectrum.

“Our mission is clear,” said Chakwera. “To serve every Malawian, in every region, without leaving anyone behind. We will continue expanding access to clean water, improving irrigation farming, turning National Economic Empowerment Fund into a full-fledged bank, and driving other life-changing developments as we’ve already begun.”

Speaking earlier at the event, His Royal Highness Themba la Mathemba Chikulamayembe praised the President’s visionary leadership, noting that development projects like the water scheme are a direct result of responsive and people-centered governance.

Under his tenure, Chakwera is deliberately pursuing strategic investments in Tourism, a key sector which forms the ATM+M strategy together with Agriculture, Mining and Manufacturing.

Provision of potable water and sanitation facilities is in accordance with Vision Malawi2063, a development blueprint founded by the Chakwera administration in 2021. It is aligned to Enabler #7 which espouses a nation with environmental sustainability through better practices in the management of natural resources.

Thazima Water Supply Scheme was constructed in collaboration with the Federal Government of Germany through KfW, Peace Parks Foundation and Transfrontier Conservation Area (TFCA) Management Unit.
