His Excellency Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera, President of the Republic of Malawi and Malawi Congress Party (MCP) presidential candidate in the September 16 General Elections, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to protecting and uplifting persons with albinism, after symbolically handing over a modern house to a beneficiary in Tembwe, Mchinji South West Constituency.

Speaking during the handover, President Chakwera said the initiative reflects his government’s determination to guarantee safety and dignity for all Malawians. “Persons with albinism have suffered for a long time in this country, but under my administration, that is no longer the case. We are constructing these houses across the country,” he declared.

The houses, equipped with steel doors and secure features, are part of a wider government programme aimed at protecting persons with albinism who have historically faced violence and discrimination. Beneficiaries expressed their gratitude, with Getrude Ulaya of Tembwe saying the homes offer them “much-needed security and peace of mind.”

The President used the occasion to encourage Malawians to safeguard the rights of all vulnerable groups. “I urge every citizen to protect people with any kind of disability. Our nation must be a safe home for everyone,” he said.

The symbolic handover in Tembwe was one of the highlights of President Chakwera’s whistle-stop tour across Lilongwe and Mchinji, where he addressed thousands of people on his administration’s development agenda. Earlier in the day, he had reaffirmed plans to construct a new district hospital and university in Lilongwe, condemned hoarding and substandard projects, and promised inclusive development in every constituency.

Aspiring Member of Parliament for Mchinji South West, Deus Gumba, hailed the Tembwe initiative and other development projects in the district. “We have seen bridges being constructed, good roads built, and police houses underway. The houses for persons with albinism show this government’s commitment to every Malawian,” he said.

President Chakwera concluded the day’s engagements by stressing that the upcoming elections are about building a Malawi where no one is left behind. “I want development everywhere, and I want every Malawian to feel safe and included,” he said.
