19 August 2025

His Excellency Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera on Tuesday continued his campaign tour across Lilongwe District with a historic stop at Bisai Trading Centre in Lilongwe Nyanja constituency, where he officially switched on electricity under the Malawi Rural Electrification Programme (MAREP) Phase 9.
The President thanked residents for the warm welcome, stressing that bringing electricity to rural communities is about more than lighting homes — it is about creating opportunities for businesses, schools, and health facilities.

“Through MAREP Phase 9, we are powering 460 sites nationwide, targeting 46,000 households,” President Chakwera said.
Adding: “Here at Bisai, this electricity will transform lives and boost economic activity for generations to come.”
A total of 280 households, public service delivery outlets and private businesses stand to benefit from this new electricity connection at Bisai Trading Centre.
The President reaffirmed his government’s commitment to ensuring state-of-the-art developments that last, including better roads, stronger infrastructure, and expanded access to programs like cash transfer initiatives known as Mtukula Pakhomo and extended National Economic Empowerment Fund (NEEF) loans.

He emphasized that even in the face of climate change and disasters, his administration has remained committed to sustaining progress in rural areas.
The President also highlighted that his administration is the first to ensure farmers receive good prices for their produce, while outlining bold initiatives such as the “1 million for 1 million Malawian each ” program to strengthen business and create wealth across the country.

Encouraging citizens not to be intimidated by others, President Chakwera called on the people of Lilongwe Nyanja to vote on September 16 to safeguard the gains already made since 2020.
“We are here to witness development reaching rural communities where most Malawians live,” he said. “With your trust, we will continue taking our development forward together.”

Before the Bisai event, President Chakwera interacted with communities in Lilongwe Central, Lilongwe Bunda, Lilongwe Msinja South, Lilongwe Msinja North and Lilongwe Msozi constituencies.
Across all these constituencies, he reassured the communities that his administration has a clear development plan aimed at transforming livelihoods at all levels of human undertaking.
Since he started going round Lilongwe on Monday as part of his campaign itinerary, President Chakwera has received overwhelming support from a district that has close to 1.3 million registered voters.
