SOUTHERN REGION CATCHES CHAKWERA THRILL IN EPIC CAMPAIGN LAUNCH
25 July 2025

Despite being the third in a series of Malawi Congress Party campaign launch events, Southern Region exceeded expectations when it welcomed party leader President Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera at Ngabu Sports Ground.
Accompanied by the First Lady, Chakwera - clad in party branded shirt and leather jacket- arrived at the sports ground to a thunderous welcome from a huge crowd estimated at over 60,000.

In his remarks, President Chakwera outlined some of the key projects his government has initiated for people in the region.
Among these key projects is the Shire Valley Transformation Program which upon completion will irrigate 43,000 hectares along a huge water canal that cuts across Chikwawa and Nsanje districts.

Another landmark project is the 72-kilometre Marka-Bangula Railway line which opens up the country to the Mozambican port of Beira. It has all the potential to boost trade between Malawi and Mozambique and beyond.
The President also promised people of the Southern Region to continue giving them economic empowerment programmes like National Economic Empowerment Fund and infrastructure such as roads, hospitals and schools so that they also remain poised for economic growth during his second term.
I want to assure you that there will be no vote tampering with Tipp-Ex this time. Even those who rigged elections before can forget about it. Just prepare to vote peacefully, because your vote will be counted fairly to ensure that the government you elected in 2020 completes its work up to 2030
On politics, Chakwera expressed optimism that the forthcoming elections will be free from manipulation as was the case in 2019.
“I want to assure you that there will be no vote tampering with Tipp-Ex this time. Even those who rigged elections before can forget about it. Just prepare to vote peacefully, because your vote will be counted fairly to ensure that the government you elected in 2020 completes its work up to 2030,” said Chakwera.

He emphasized that the MCP now boasts more branches across the country than ever before, positioning the party for a comprehensive national victory, not just in the south.
Speaking earlier, Senior Chief Chimombo commended the President for being a statesman and a unifier of the nation whose leadership does not segregate in distributing development.
