As part of the modern roadways constructed since 2020, government has included road safety projects as way of curbing accidents along some of the busiest and high risk trading centres on the M1 Road.
In a project called Black Spot Project, trading centres such as Tsangano and Kampepuza in Ntcheu and Lunzu in Blantyre have already been transformed.
The project's scope includes constructing center medians, bus bays, pedestrian and cyclist infrastructure, street lights and improved drainage systems to reduce accidents and enhance safety.
These Black Spot improvements are part of the broader initiatives the Chakwera administration is carrying out to enhance infrastructure and prevent accidents, ensuring safer environments for both drivers and local residents.
The US$11.81 million project is part of the broader Southern Africa Trade and Transport Facilitation Project co-financed by the World Bank and European Investment Bank.
