The 3.9 kilometer Chilima Highway in Lilongwe is a transformative infrastructure initiative aimed at enhancing urban mobility and reducing traffic congestion between the City Centre and Old Town.
It is one of President Chakwera’s landmark infrastructure projects that has changed the face of the capital city. He launched construction works on August 31, 2021.
Formerly a four-lane roadway, it has been upgraded to a six-lane dual carriageway, the first of its kind in Malawi. It extends from the Parliament Roundabout, passing through the Nature Sanctuary and Tsoka Market, and concluding where the road joins M1 Road in Old Town.
Some notable features that have been added to the road are a new bridge over Lingadzi River, a partial cloverleaf interchange at Kamuzu Central Hospital roundabout, dedicated lanes for cyclists and pedestrian walkways and a provision for a future tram line in the median.
