Another landmark project that was adopted by the Chakwera administration while it was in its infant stages is the Dedza One Go Border Post (OGBP), a modern border facility that serves as a key transit point between Malawi and Mozambique, connecting with the Calomue border post in Mozambique's Tete Province. It is strategically situated along the Beira-Nacala and North-South Corridors and plays a vital role in facilitating regional trade and transportation.
Key Features
Some of the features of the One Go Border Post include;
Integrated Services: The OSBP houses various government agencies under one roof, including the Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA), Immigration Department, Malawi Bureau of Standards, and the Ministries of Agriculture and Health. This integration streamlines border procedures by allowing travelers and goods to be processed in a single location
Modern Facilities: The facility includes two examination bays for goods, parking space for up to 100 freight trucks, and a passenger terminal equipped with amenities to enhance comfort and efficiency for travelers
Impact on Trade and Efficiency
Prior to the infrastructure’s establishment, clearing goods at the Dedza border could take up to three days. With the new system, clearance times have been significantly reduced to less than half a day, improving the flow of trade and reducing congestion
Current Status and Future Developments
Malawi and Mozambique Presidents, Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera and Daniel Chapo respectively, opened the OGBP recently to signify commencement of operations.
Overall, the Dedza One-Stop Border Post represents a significant step forward in enhancing trade efficiency and regional integration between Malawi and Mozambique.
