Construction works of the Griffin Saenda Indoor Sports Complex were flagged off by President Chakwera in March 2021.
Located adjacent to the Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe, the complex is a significant infrastructure project aimed at enhancing the country's sports facilities.
The multi-purpose arena is the first of its kind with a sitting capacity of 5000. It features courts for netball, basketball, volleyball, tennis, and facilities for boxing, athletics, a gym, restaurant, shops, and office spaces.
While at 80 percent completion rate, the arena successfully hosted the 10th edition of the African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5 Youth Games in 2022.
The games attracted some 2000 sports men and women from Zimbabwe, Zambia, South Africa, Kingdom of Eswatini, Angola, Botswana, Namibia, Mozambique, Lesotho, Comoros, Seychelles and Malawi.
