One of the priority projects President Chakwera wanted to see finished without delay when he assumed office was the raising and rehabilitation of the Kamuzu Dam 1 in Malingunde in order to increase storage capacity and improve dam safety among other outcomes.
Since completion, the modern facility has addressed immediate and medium term water security needs, and support a long-term solution to growing water demands of the fast growing capital city, Lilongwe.
It is a tremendous feat that a dam with previous storage capacity of 5 million cubic metres adequate for four months of water supply has now been upgraded manifold to a capacity of 25 million cubic metres with a holding duration of 12 months.
It is also gratifying to note that the project has created complementary utility services in form of the Malingunde Water Supply System which provides clean water to residents of Malingunde Trading Centre and Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (Luanar) at Bunda.
