The 72-km Marka - Bangula railway line is a landmark project that has been initiated by the Chakwera administration to open up more trade opportunities for Malawi via the Mozambican Port of Beira.
Currently, Malawi now receives petroleum products via Beira because the railway line has been fully reworked on on the Mozambican side all the way to border post of Vila Nova Da Fronteria and Marka where the railway project begins.
Malawi is already constructing dry port facilities at Marka to improve cargo logistics.
Once the 72 kilometre stretch is finalised, plans are already intact to revamp the entire rail line from Bangula all the way to Limbe via Luchenza.
Following the bold move to restore the railway system after decades of neglect, President Chakwera has now set the right tone to open up the length and breadth of the country to a railway network that facilitates movements of cargo and goods in light of enhanced trade
