On March 7, 2021 the Chakwera administration commenced construction works of the Mwanza/ Zobue One Stop Border Post to facilitate strategic trade between Blantyre and Tete on a trade route known as the Tete Corridor.
As of early 2025, the Mwanza/Zóbuè One Stop Border Post (OSBP) is already operational on the Malawian side following proper handovers to government by contractors. The Mozambican side is still in the process of finalizing construction so that both sides can fully operationalize the facility.
The One Stop Border Post aims to streamline border procedures by housing multiple agencies—including the Malawi Revenue Authority, Immigration, Police, and the Malawi Bureau of Standards—under one roof. This consolidation is expected to reduce clearance times and enhance trade efficiency between Malawi and Mozambique
Prior to the construction of this significant infrastructure both countries used to operate independently each handling its own customs and immigration procedures. This separation often led to delays, especially for cargo trucks, due to duplicated processes and limited infrastructure.
This initiative, therefore, aims at streamlining border procedures by consolidating customs and immigration services into a single facility, thereby reducing clearance times and operational costs.
In summary, the Mwanza/Zobue OSBP represents a collaborative effort by Malawi and Mozambique to modernize border management, enhance trade facilitation, and strengthen regional connectivity.
