Lilongwe, a metropolis that had remained neglected for decades, is now wearing a new face befitting its status of capital city.
Part of this transformation is construction of a modern road network to ease mobility and facilitate economic activity.
The New Lilongwe Bridge is a key infrastructure at the heart of the city's bustling commercial locations, connecting Old Town and Bwalo La Njobvu shopping area.
The bridge is being reconstructed and expanded to a five-lane carriageway. Three times larger than the previous structure and the country’s largest bridge upon completion, this is an engineering masterpiece that will ease congestion. It will also spur trade linkages with neighboring countries within the Nacala and Northern Corridors.
The New Lilongwe Bridge has also ushered in modern architectural aesthetics to areas along the kilometer-long stretch on both sides of the structure.
Government of Malawi has partnered with the Japanese Government who have injected K37 billion towards this project.
