Since 2020, Karonga has become an excellent model of how irrigation and agro-processing interdependently add value to government’s job and wealth creation targets in line with the Irrigation Master Plan and Investment Framework.
It now has its first rice milling factory at the 1000-hectare Nthola-Illola Irrigation Scheme. The plant, with milling capacity of 50 tonnes per day, employs over 100 workers and benefits over 2500 anchor and out-grower farmers.
Features of the factory include a rice milling machine, a grader, destoner, polisher and packaging machine.
