Revamped Wovwe Irrigation Scheme

Statistics show that Karonga has a potential irrigation area of 13,000 hectares, a potential that has not been fully exploited. 

President Chakwera has deployed efforts to restore Karonga’s food production capacity through irrigation schemes that are being revived after been abandoned in the 1990s when Ngwazi Dr Hastings Kamuzu Banda left office.

One of these is the newly-upgraded 700-hectare Wovwe Irrigation Scheme is now benefiting 1700 rice farmers who operate under a single cooperative.
