Nyika National Park and Vwaza Marsh Wildlife Reserve in Rumphi District are among the leading attraction sites that register a large number of both foreigners and locals who trek to these picturesque lands for a moment of thrill. On the boundaries of these conservation sites reside communities who time and again have come into conflict with wildlife while looking for water sources.
The Chakwera administration is addressing the problem by constructing the Thazima Gravity Piped Water Supply Scheme. Upon completion, the project will provide potable water and create sustainable communities on the borders of the two significant tourist attraction sites. Earmarked to be completed by June this year, the project will benefit over 18,000 people from this year and 33,000 by 2034.
Some of the institutions that have worked with Government of Malawi in providing potable water to people of Rumphi under this project include the Federal Government of Germany through KfW, Peace Parks Foundation and Transfrontier Conservation Area (TFCA) Management Unit.
